In my last post I began to look at the creation story to see if we can find the fatherly attributes of our unchanging, eternal Creator. Genesis 1:27 says, "God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them." It was them creating us; the first Parents, the three in one God, making the first children. Here are some of the qualities of a good parent I see demonstrated by God at creation.
He is devoted. In Genesis 3:15, when humanity displayed it’s first disloyalty, God declared gave humanity hope for salvation, before the consequences. He said to the serpent, speaking of the Savior to come “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head and you will bruise his heel.” And though they had to leave the garden, God did not leave them, but continued with them and their children.
He is interested. After they sinned, God came to them “They heard Yahweh God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day.. Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, ‘Where are you?’”(Genesis 3:8a, 9). And God had more questions as He spoke with them “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? What have you done?” God knew all, but He wanted to engage Adam and Eve. He wanted to hear what they had to say.
He is generous. In Genesis 1:28-29, God says to Adam and Eve, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.” In Genesis 2, God continues his generosity toward man, “God planted a garden” for him, and he searches for a suitable companion for man, making woman. Not only this, but He gave us the senses to experience the beauty in his creation – the smell of flowers, the beauty of the stars, the sound of the ocean, the feel of feathers, the taste of a fresh orange, and so much more.
